Marlene Dietrich in
Seven Sinners
, 1940
I recently ran across this lovely style icon while researching designers of the 1930s for a class project and I fell in love. Her name is Marlene Dietrich. Marlene Dietrich was a famous actress in Hollywood during the 1930-40s. Marlene's style stood out from others because She often wore tuxedos off screen, and three-piece suits. She was known for her androgynous style, that still was very appealing on her. Dietrich did still wear her dresses, fur, and the expected attire for the "old Hollywood glamour" era. The actresses during that time often were clients of couturiers, and muses for designers. Marlene wore designs by Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, Travis Banton, and more.

Something interesting I found was that she performed the first homosexual kiss in cinema history in the film morocco from 1930. She was dressed as a man for that scene. That made me think about Madonna kissing Britney Spears at the VMAs in 2003, and then Madonna wearing a top hat and suit earlier this year, giving off a Dietrich look. Not bad at all Madonna.

"I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men."
